The Arrival
2012 | 4 min | English, Japanese Written and Directed by Narissa Lee A close-knit church community is rattled by an invasion of the queerest kind. Hear eyewitness accounts as these fragile interview subjects boldly relive the terror. This satirical short is a hilarious and mostly fictitious take on LGBT issues in an Asian American church. |

Background
The AIDS crisis rocked San Francisco hard in the 1980's and 1990's. Pine UMC was no exception. The lay members either knew friends or family members who had fallen ill. Others volunteered their time in hospice care and saw first hand the devastating effects of HIV and AIDS on the people they cared for. It was then a simple act to mobilize the congregation as a body to become what United Methodists call a Reconciling Church. Pine UMC wanted to express solidarity with the LGBT community of San Francisco and to do it publicly.
This film is fictional satire except for the moments the interview subjects express their sincere stories of acceptance for queer congregants.
